Lace weight vs Fingering Weight

I've never really thought that fingering weight was a very thick yarn. And it's not. Really. But when you wind 470 yards of lace weight yarn by hand and then turn around and wind up 420 yards of fingering weight by hand it sure does feel a lot heavier!

Just take a look at this picture for comparison.

The blue ball actually is 470 yards. The red ball is 420. But the red ball is much bigger and it wound up so much faster (probably just as fast as worsted).

Even Jack finds the discrepency curious.

And I'm toying with starting a shawlette in the lace today. God, people who work w/lace must be completely crazy.

  1. Maybe a little crazy... :) I've knitted two sweaters now out of laceweight and it's fantasic. Very light weight and lovely.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's really fun and rewarding.

Although, I will say, switching between projects in worsted and laceweight is a total mind trip.

What yarns are in your photos?

  2. I've got 3 projects going right now. The citron in the blue lace, peak island hood in plymouth encore worsted/bulky and those brown socks in fine (which is a lot like lace? it's definitely finer than fingering).

The blue is Malabrigo Lace Baby in Taureg and the red is Cherry Tree Hill in semi-solid Cherry.

I started working on the Citron w/the Malabrigo and so far so good. It's so super soft. I can't wait to wear this thing around my neck!

  3. That red yarn is amazing. I wish I knit more things with fingering weight yarn, because it seems like I love every single brand and color of it. Heh.

Also, your kitteh is super cute!
